How to Delete QuickBooks Online Account?

As it happens in our life sometimes we just have to take a new start. In a similar way when there is a lot of mess in our current company files or QuickBooks Online. What we can do is delete QuickBooks Online and start over with new books. If you will know how to take a fresh start with a new QuickBooks Online company you can do your work more efficiently than before. In case you are a new customer, you can simply start over. Or if you’ve used QuickBooks for a while, you need to create a new company. But, no need to worry you will know everything when you will finish reading the article.

Start over in QuickBooks Online

To take a fresh start you don’t need to start from scratch. You can save your time by reusing the lists from your old company. You can simply export to excel. Export the reports which are necessary to you and you want them in your new company file (Account List, Customer Contact List, Supplier Contact List, or Product/Service List report.) And import the list from excel when you start fresh in QuickBooks online.

Have a fresh Start (reset your account)

To reset your account first acknowledge how long you’ve been using QuickBooks. And then choose the procedure accordingly.

If you are using your account for more than 90 days

If you have been using your QuickBooks Online account for more than 90 days, you can not delete QuickBooks Online account data. The only option left for you is to cancel your account, and then have a new subscription. To cancel your subscription follow the steps shown in the section below. After canceling your subscription start a new account to do that

Sign up for a new account from the official website of Intuit. There is no need for a new user ID or password, use the same user ID and password that you did previously.

If you are using your account for less than 90 days

This is only helpful for those who are working with QuickBooks Online Plus or Essentials only. If you are active with some other version of QuickBooks maybe QuickBooks Online Simple Start, then you have to cancel your current account and start a new one. The process is not recommended for your own firm’s books if you are using QuickBooks Online for Accountants. Because it can lead to irreversible damage. Follow the steps shown below to take a fresh start. 

Warning: If you once delete QuickBooks Online all data in the company file you will not be able to reverse the changes. You can’t restore it. 

You also have the option to purge your account if you’re using QuickBooks Online Plus, Essentials, and Advanced. In this, the system deletes all data entered into the company, and you’re unable to restore or reverse them.

To purge the data, follow the steps listed below:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks Online Company.
  2. Change the URL to include /purge the company.
    E.g: Change https://sg.qbo.intuit.com/app/homepage to https://sg.qbo.intuit.com/app/purgecompany.
  3. The upcoming screen will provide a summary of the items to be deleted.
  4. Enter the word “YES” once the data gets deleted, then click OK.
  5. Choose Wipe Data once your selections are complete.
  6. When the delete process is complete, you will be redirected to your homepage.

Things to know:

  • You can change the industry If the industry you want to use is different from the one showing.
  • You could either create accounts based on your industry or start with an empty chart of accounts. Select according to your preferences.

Cancel your QuickBooks Online subscription

If your QuickBooks account is older than 90 days, you need to cancel your account and start a new subscription.

Note: 

  • Ensure that you are signed in to QuickBooks from a web browser. You can’t cancel your account from the QuickBooks mobile app.
  • Ensure that you have administrative rights. To do so sign in as the admin user in QuickBooks Online to cancel the subscription. Only admins have the right to unsubscribe from the QuickBooks online software.
  • Purchased your subscription from iTunes or Google Play? Find out how to cancel your subscription through an app store.

Note: If you can’t sign in, you have to reset your password. And after that sign in successfully. There can be two situations you’re canceling your free trial or If you have a subscription. Follow the steps according to your situation.

Cancel your free trial:

  1. Reach out to the Settings and then Company Settings.
  2. Choose Billing & Subscription.
  3. Tap on Cancel your trial.
  4. Select Continue to cancel.
  5. Do as steps on the screen instructed.
  6. Select Submit and cancel the subscription.
  7. Click on Got it.

Cancel your subscription:

  1. Reach out to the Settings and then Company Settings.
  2. Choose the Billing & Subscription tab.
  3. In the QuickBooks section, select Cancel subscription or Cancel online.
  4. Continue to cancel, then select Continue to cancel again (if applicable).
  5. Do as steps on the screen instructed.
  6. Select Submit and cancel the subscription.
  7. Click on Got it.

Once you’re done, The account administrator will receive an email from Intuit that confirms we canceled your subscription.

If your account is suspended, you need to resubscribe before you can cancel. Or, Intuit will cancel your subscription after three failed attempts to charge your payment method.

What happens to your data after you cancel

  • For paid subscriptions, we hang on to your data for up to a year. You can pick up where you left off if you decide to come back.
  • If you subscribe again after a year, you won’t have access to your previous data.

Tip: Take print out of forms and reports you might need in the future.
