QuickBooks chip and magstripe card reader

QuickBooks chip and magstripe card reader is an interesting aspect of the QuickBooks accounting software solution. Also known as the new Gopayment EMV chip card reader.

In this article, you will find all the information related to the new GoPayment EMV chip card reader. Additionally, you can also contact our QuickBooks Support Technical Helpdesk +1-844-405-0904 to learn more.

Magstripe card

The Magstripe begins with a quick swipe of the card through the card reader. The payment terminal then sends an authorization request to the parties in the payment chain (usually the buyer, the payment processor, and the issuing bank). If approved, the terminal PIN or customer signature can be requested to verify and complete the transaction.

Requirements

1 .Must read magstripe – not EMV chip / NFC

EMV support for reading via magstripe is different – so, if your reader reads for EMV (chip), NFC (tap-and-pay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, etc.) rather than the magstripe, it could be an EMV terminal under this class of readers, And not supported.

2. Must work in keyboard emulation mode

Supported readers read the data stored on the magstripe as letters of the keyboard, which acts as a standard keyboard. This is commonly referred to as the “keyboard emulation”, “keyboard slit” and/or “inheritance” mode. Note that readers who work in non-keyboard emulation modes (such as “HID,” and/or “interface” modes) may not work with our integration – check your device manual to support keyboard emulation mode.

The following readers are invited to work with our integration:

  • Magtek Mini USB Swipe Card Reader
    • Part Number: MAG21040145
    • Magstripe Reader – Color: Black
    • Dimensions: 1.23 “high x 1.28” wide x 3.94 “long
    • Length: Interface / Port: USB-2.0 USB
    • System: Windows / MacOS via USB
    • Type: Keyboard simulation
  • Magtek Dynamag USB Swipe Card Reader
    • Part Number: MAG21073062
    • Magstripe Reader – Color: Black
    • Dimensions: 1.23 “high x 1.28” wide x 3.94 “long
    • Length: Interface / Port: USB-2.0 USB
    • Keyboard Talk: Certifications and Standards
    • System: Windows / MacOS device via USB
    • Type: Keyboard simulation

3. Must be run in unencrypted mode

Some gateway/service providers (including Authorize.net and others) ship encrypted magstripe readers. These readers obscure important card information and are not conducive to our integration.

If, while testing the card (such as using the method above), you will see a different value each time, and/or the output card does not have the details, it may be encrypted or incorrect – for help. Contact your merchant service provider.

 Chip Card

The EMV transaction begins when the customer inserts or at the card chip card payment terminal, where it remains the entire transaction. The payment terminal then sends an authorization request to the parties in the payment chain – similar to the magstripe transaction.

The card authenticates the data and requests the terminal to authenticate the transaction. The terminal requests authority and receives a response – and the point at which the customer can remove the chip card from the EMV chip card reader.

One thing that is visible to consumers is that the chip card transaction takes time to process. Impatient with the habit of pulling their credit card out of their wallet, it seemed eternal to quickly swipe and pocket it immediately and keep the card in the payment terminal for a few extra seconds.

For business owners, impatient customers who are accustomed to swiping are not enough to keep their cards at the EMV terminals for authorization – or they forget their cards at the terminals. However, with the new “quick chip” technology EMV transactions have grown rapidly and immersion cards have become second nature to many consumers.

Why Magstripe Cards Can’t Hit Chip Card Security

Card Network The reason the card network took the initiative to transfer EMV technology was to combat card fraud. Magstripe credit cards and debit cards are subject to a fraudulent practice called “skimming”. As easy as a merchant card reader can read static data from the back of a magstripe card, thieves can use a device called a card skimmer to do this.

Card skimmers are small, inexpensive devices that are stored in legitimate card readers and are often found in self-service environments such as ATMs or gas stations. For transactions that require a PIN, some highly skilled criminals even use a small camera that records the punching of the cardholder in the PIN on the keypad.

Skimmer and camera give everything needed to make fake cards that can be drawn from the thief victim’s account.

Microchip duplication on EMV cards is more difficult and less economical because it requires advanced and expensive technology.

Visa reports a 76 percent reduction in counterfeit card fraud for merchants who upgrade to chip card technology.
